There has been an increase in pedestrians since the beginning of quarantine due to Covid-19. Therefore, pedestrians and drivers should be extra careful when out and about within walkable communities.
As a pedestrian, it is your duty to be knowledgeable and alert about the rights of the road. Alabama law states that if a pedestrian is crossing a road at a point other than a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk, the pedestrian must yield to oncoming cars UNLESS she has already and under safe conditions, entered the roadway. Here are
some basic pedestrian safety tips:
Be alert at all times. Keep off of electronics to increase your awareness.
Cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections. Watch all traffic signals before crossing.
Be visible to drivers and wear bright colors to stand out.
Bike and walk on sidewalks when they are available. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing upcoming traffic while trying to stay off the road if possible.
Obey signals and signs while following the rules of the road.
Never assume a driver will see you. Make sure to lock eyes with drivers as they approach.
